THIS ONLY WORKS WITH IPHONE 1GEN, IPHONE 3G, AND 1GEN IPOD TOUCH
THE IPOD TOUCH 2G ISN”T JAILBREAKABLE YET
You don’y really need detailed instructions on how to jailbreak to 2.2. It is just way too easy. This is just to answer some questions and give some pointers to the process.
If you want to keep all of your Apps.
- Install “AptBackup” from Cydia and run the app. Click “Backup”.
If you want to only keep certain Apps
- Personally, I recommend doing this. Personally, I add a lot of Apps and then never use them. This slows down the iPod and can result in crashes or slower performances. What I would suggest is opening Cydia and clicking “Manage” and then “Packages”. Take some screenshots (hold home and power and your screen will flash white) of all of the apps you have. Then sync your iPod and save your pictures from your iPod (as a removable disk). THen you will have all of the apps you had and can figure out which ones you would like to keep.
Now go into iTunes and click “Update”.
- Update your iPod. DO NOT RESTORE (unless you want to start from scratch).
Pwn in QuickPwn (download here)
- Read my other post on how to use QuickPwn (here)
- If you downloaded the firmware from iTunes, here is where it is “C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates”
If you kept all of your apps, then open Cydia and download “AptBackup” (which you used earlier) and run it. Click “Restore” and it will download all of your apps that you previously had.
NOTE: Updating DOES NOT delete your jailbroken apps. It only erases the “icon” (viewable part). Reinstalling the app will show the icon and allow all data to be the same from where you left off. Restoring will delete everything on your iPod, including apps, data, music, etc

2.2
As previously announced, Apple has released the new iPod Touch and iPhone Update 2.2. And there’s a lot to like about what they have done. They’ve tweaked and added some great new features.
- Podacast downloading over WiFi AND Phone Internet service. However, we’re not happy that you can’t subscribe or download huge podcasts; there is a cap on the size ( a 10MB cap).
- Apple has also tweaked the visual voicemail and removed some bugs from the overall fluidity of the GUI.
- After Google introduced “Street View” on the G1, Apple really wanted that same technology and have now added it to Google Maps. Yet, unfortunately, this only works on the iPhone 1 and 2G and not on the iPod Touch.
- Apple has done some great work on the App Store. New sorting options of “Top Paid,” “Top Free,” and “Release Date” are available when browsing categories like “Games” or “Productivity” which allows for more pleasant control over what you see. A large icon taken from a popular application is now also displayed next to each category name to help identify it. Plus, when viewing a specific application’s details, all screenshots for the application are now accessible on the devices through a nice slide show.
- Another big thing they have added is rating. When you delete icons they will now ask you if you want to rate the App. before deleting it. Of course, you can always respectfully decline.
- You can now also turn of the “auto-correction” while typing.
- They have added new feature where pressing the Home button when viewing any Home screen application page will bring you to the first page.
- The new 2.2 OS has also solved the problems with Mail’s fetching schedules, and it has also improved formatting of wide HTML e-mail.
- Now this may be the placebo effect but everything seems much faster. Apps start faster, the system is more responsive, google maps pinpoints your location faster, and even safari seems smoother.
Of course, the iPod is still missing some things that would be very helpful. ”Cut and Paste” is said to be on its way. But the single most awaited feature, the “Push alerts feature”, which would allow more apps to run in the background, which was supposed to arrive on the 2.1 update, has still not shown its face.
Overal, this update is a nice improvement in amaturing OS.

The Dev team has just released great news: QuickPwn & PwnageTool released for Firmware 2.2!!
They suggest that if you are still waiting for the 3G iPhone soft unlock the you should not us QuickPwn or use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool.
And depending on what you have:
SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G
Since your phone is already unlocked you need only to update to 2.2 using iTunes and use QuickPwn to Jailbreak. This, of course, will also add Cydia and Installer.
Locked iPhone 3G - Preserve Baseband
For people who have a locked 3G and want to update to 2.2 and at the same time preserve the current baseband software. To keep the baseband you have to create a custom .ipsw with PwnageTool. The only problem for this, of you course, is that PwnageTool is only available on Mac OS X.
Locked iPhone 3G
If you are using your iPhone with one carrier and have no interest in the possibility of an iPhone 3G unlock in the near future then just restore or upgrade to 2.2 using iTunes and use QuickPwn to Jailbreak and add Cydia and Installer.
iPhone 2G (1st Generation)
Update or Restore your iPhone 2G with iTunes then run QuickPwn.
iPod Touch 1G (Original iPod Touch)
Update to 2.2 with iTunes and run QuickPwn.
iPod Touch 2G (New iPod Touch)
Sorry but still no good news here.
And here are the torrents:
PwnageTool 2.2.1 for Mac OSX is here
QuickPwn 2.2 for Mac OSX is here
QuickPwn 2.2 for Windows is here

BigBoss should be a familiar name to those of you with a jailbroken iPod. He is the host of hundreds of apps that you find in Cydia. He has posted a warning to all jailbreakers on his site, which I think needs to be spread and heeded.
Pusher is RiPDev’s 2.2 version of a jailbreak. This should be avoided and not used. Instead use the dev team’s jailbreaks. RiPDev’s version will block access to / partition and make it impossible to install Cydia. (They want you using Installer of course). It’s pretty much worthless since most the packages are in Cydia. The dev team’s jailbreak allows you to use both Cydia and Installer. There is no valid reason to use Pusher instead of one of the pwnages below.
Update: This point had to be made. Pusher tries to say it doesn’t void your warranty indicating that it is different than pwnage / quickpwn in this regard. It is not. This is a lie! Your warranty is “officially” voided, although a simple restore in iTunes undoes any jailbreak and you can always get warranty service. Using pusher or pwnage makes no difference in this regard.
Pusher is not better for newbies. The purpose of jailbreaking is to get as much non-appstore software onto your device as you can. Installer only offers abotu 8% of what is in Cydia. Certainly having 8% of the software packages is not good for newbies.
So beware. Do not use this method for jailbreaking. I have not posted a link for the jailbreak on purpose, although Googleing isn’t hard to do. Just be careful and stick with thhe trustworthy Dev Team that brought us QuickPwn.

I am thrilled to announce that the amazing iPhone-Dev Team has done it again. With lightening speed, they have already released a working version of QuickPwn that jailbreaks firmware 2.2.
This is a simple jailbreak method now. Just update your iPod in iTunes and then run the new version of QuickPwn (download here). It is quite simple really. This will work on any type of iPhone and the first Gen iPod Touch (sorry to all of you 2nd Gen owners).

As I wrote previously, do not upgrade to 2.2 yet. Here is yet another warning from the creators of the actual jailbreaking programs. If you don’t listen to me, at least listen to people who know what they are talking about.
So, as anticipated our friends the misfits have recently released the long awaited 2.2 update. We can confirm that this update SHOULD NOT be applied using iTunes if you want the chance of a soft-unlock in the near future.
If you want to keep that option of a ‘soft-unlock in the near future’ available but you want the new features of 2.2, you will be able to update to 2.2 using a PwnageTool created custom ipsw file that disables the baseband update. You will be able to do this using an updated version of PwnageTool that will be released sometime soon.
Some facts -
- The 2.2 firmware for 3G contains a baseband update for the 3G iPhone
- The 2.2 firmware for 2G (1st gen iPhones) doesn’t contain a baseband update and the baseband is still at 04.05.04
- We believe that our Pwnage technique (and therefore the Jailbreak) isn’t affected, but PwnageTool and QuickPwn do not support this release as yet, so DO NOT install 2.2 using iTunes as you will lose your jailbreak
- If you apply this update and you previously relied on PwnageTool or QuickPwn to activate your phone, it may become temporarily deactivated and unusable (until we release the new version of PwnageTool or QuickPwn).
- PwnageTool and QuickPwn updates will be released as soon as possible that will allow a safe update path to 2.2 the release of these updates is inevitable but not imminent, we are creating the modifications right now and we need to put the new software through the usual testing process.
- If you apply this update and you have third-party (non AppStore) applications that you rely on they will stop working.
- 2G (1st gen) iPhone users who cannot wait for the new PwnageTool or QuickPwn can safely “Update” to 2.2 using iTunes, this will preserve the existing activation. However “restoring” to 2.2 using iTunes will return the iPhone to the unactivated state. If you are in any doubt just wait. NB: This works for 2G ONLY.
- The use of SIM-Proxies (small circuit boards/chips that sit underneath the SIM card) to provide GSM/UMTS service on your locked iPhone 3G is a method that we have always advised against. Early reports suggest that the 2.2 update disables the functionality of these devices. The techniques used were always unreliable and we are surprised that they have lasted this long.
- We are not working on the 2nd generation iPod touch at the moment, so we cannot comment on what the the 2.2 software update may do to this specific model
So, as always, if you are in any doubt whatsoever please delay the install of this firmware on any of your devices until we have investigated the release in more detail. Watch this space
So there it is. The warning. Do not update yet, and I will not have to help you and answer all of your stupid questions dealing with NOT FOLLOWING ADVICE. Thank You.
Also, there is a new version of iTunes is out (8.02). Do not upgrade to this. iTunes is quite stable now, and this update may affect the jailbreaking process. Don’t upgrade until we say it is okay to do so.

HEre is the words right from the iPhone Dev Team from their site:
This ability we now have to spawn background tasks means we are one step closer to the 3G soft unlock. We have a clear path to follow, and “all” that remains is the implementation.
A quick summary of the key 3G-unlock-related achievements we’ve made so far:
- Unsigned code execution on 3G baseband
- Reverting 01.45 baseband to previous versions
- Patching of static text (the AT&V demo)
- Injection of AT routines (the task list demo)
- Injection of background tasks (this demo)
Now it’s on to overriding the baseband code that enforces the carrier lock.
A high-quality version of the video is available via bittorrent here.
A version that’s playable on your iPhone or iPod Touch is available here
P.S. That “One more thing!” text is being generated by the backgrounded “steve” task at 5-second intervals. The “A0” is the task’s priority.
P.P.S. Remember…don’t update to official 2.2 when it comes out if you ultimately want a 3G soft unlock!
Yeah, we finally have some good news. I personally am not affected by this update (I own an iPod Touch), but for all of you with iPhone 3Gs, you can now start becoming excited.

Sorry, but the news has not really changed. The Dev Team stated that they are currently just working on the iPhone 3G soft Unlock. So for those iPhone owners that’s great, but they have put the iPod Touch 2G jailbreak on a tragic hold. In their words:
We are not working on the iPod Touch 2G at the moment, we certainly have interest in this platform as we have mentioned before and we have done some preliminary analysis, but currently all eyes are still on the iPhone 3G.
So be patient and as The Lone Stag has emphasized: Don’t Update!

I have said it before and I will say it again: DO NOT UPGRADE! Now, I know that the new firmware (2.2) is not yet out. I just wanted to warn you that upgrading your iPod may and will cause it to be unjailbreakable. For your sake (and so I do not get a lot of useless emails), wait until I write to let you know that it is safe to upgrade. Upgrading WILL DELETE all of your jailbroken apps and refresh it to Apple standards. We all have to let the Dev Team create a method for jailbreaking. This will most likely be in the form of an upgraded version of QuickPwn, or cmw might update WinPwn. I dougt that Zibri will update ZiPhone anytime soon.
So, just to reiterate. DO NOT UPGRADE YET.

So since there hasn’t been any real big iPod touch 2G hacking news I decided to just post some ipod Touch tricks some of you may not know. There isn’t really a real manual so here are some extra tipps:
- On Safari, while scrolling through a long page, tap the bar at the top of your screen containing the time and battery and Safari will automatically scroll up to the top of the page.
- Double clicking the home button in any application, or with the screen off will bring up the music controls.
- To completely exit an application to save battery power. Press and holding the home button for approximately 5-8 seconds. This will help boost battery life if you run lots of different apps regularly.
- Holding down letters on the keyboard for an extra second will pop up some extra symbols associated with those letters. After it pops up, slide your finger over to the symbol you like and let go.
- When you are in the Mail app’s inbox view, slide your finger from left to right on a message and a ‘delete’ button will appear.
- When typing a lot of text in Safari turn it to horizontal view. The keyboard will be larger have a larger gap between each letter allowing for fewer errors while typing.
- When viewing a website in Safari, if you want to check the url of a link before clicking it, hold your finger on the link and a bubble will appear showing the URL that the link is tied to.
- A quick way to open a link in a new window in Safari is to open a new page, tap the bookmarks icon, tap the history folder and then just click on the last page you were on.
- If you do make a type while typing just hold down and a bubble will appear allowing you to find the exact spot where you made the mistake.
- Double tapping the spacebar will insert a period.
- If you have trouble typing on the small keyboard and really want to use the bigger one just go to www.meebo.com.
- In Google Maps, double tapping zooms in and single tapping with two fingers zooms out.
- when watching a movie press pause and press foward and hold it down and this will make your video go slow motion to fast foward. Just don’t press pause before you do it.
- Screen Shooting: hold down the sleep button and then press home. Your screen should flash white and a new picture should appear in your photos.
- When in sleep mode, tap the home button twice to bring up the embedded music controls.
Please comment any others that you know of and find interesting.
